At INTX in Chicago, Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) CEO Brian Roberts previewed a DOCSIS 3.1 modem designed to make gigabit Internet speeds available to most of its customers. Developed by teams in Philadelphia and Silicon Valley, the modem goes into production this year and is expected to be available to customers in early 2016. When combined with a DOCSIS 3.1-enabled network, the Gigabit Home Gateway is intended to deliver speeds greater than 1 Gbps over HFC.
The Gigabit Home Gateway will also feature a WiFi router designed to deliver gigabit wireless speeds, IP video technology and integrated home automation and security capabilities. It also uses open-sourced RDK B software.
THE MSO also announced a voice-controlled TV remote control for its X1 platform. The new Xfinity remote with voice control is designed to let viewers search for networks, shows and movies; set DVR recordings; get recommendations; navigate Xfinity On Demand and more.
