Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) announced plans to launch its Gigabit Pro residential broadband service to nearly 3 million California homes starting in June. Gigabit Pro is a symmetrical, 2 Gbps Internet service that will be delivered via fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and offered to customers in the Chico, Fresno, Marysville/Yuba City, Merced, Modesto, Monterey, Sacramento, Salinas, San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Barbara County, Stockton and Visalia metro areas.
Gigabit Pro will be available to homes within close proximity of Comcast's fiber network and will require installation of professional-grade equipment. Comcast first announced Gigabit Pro in Atlanta earlier this month.
The MSO also announced it will launch Extreme 250, a new 250 Mbps Internet speed tier, for California customers. The company also will increase the speeds of its Performance tier from 50 Mbps to 75 Mbps and its Blast tier from 105 Mbps to 150 Mbps, both at no additional cost to customers. The changes will begin to go into effect starting in May and continue throughout the year.
