Bay Area ISP Sonic is building out a fiber-based 1 Gbps Internet service in six Northern California communities, including the city of Brentwood. Sonic, which is working with ADTRAN (NASDAQ:ADTN) on the FTTH project, plans to offer gigabit fiber Internet and unlimited phone service for $40 per month.

Sonic also plans to offer free gigabit Internet service to local school districts when residents sign up for service. The company is following a "fiberhood" approach to determine where the greatest demand is.
