Connected TVs Still Just ... Well, TVs
According to the NPD Group, the Internet-connected TV is still mostly used to watch video rather than surf the Web or perform other computing types of tasks. Among connected TV owners, nearly 60% use the device to watch over-the-top (OTT) video, and about 15% listen to OTT music. Surfing the Internet, viewing computer files, social media, games and other traditional computer-based activities all came in at 10% or less. NPD ascribes the lower numbers for some activities partly to the availability of better platforms (PC, tablet, smartphone) for those tasks, and also to an increasingly complex user experience.
