Adoption of 100 Gigabit Ethernet drives service provider core router sales growth: Dell’Oro

June 4, 2019

Record shipments of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) router ports in the first quarter of this year drove service provider core router market growth of 7% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2019, says Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm says in a newly published report that Cisco enjoyed a particularly good start to the year.

“Network operators are benefitting from lower prices of 100GbE products to add capacity to their backbone and metro networks—the volume of 100GbE port shipments almost doubled year-over-year,” said Shin Umeda, vice president at Dell’Oro Group. “Demand for core routers was strong in the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe, more than offsetting lower sales in North America.”

Despite the decline in the U.S., Cisco regained the top spot in the supplier rankings from Huawei. Juniper Networks remained in third position. Meanwhile, the Service Provider Edge Router market saw 2% year-over-year growth in the quarter. The quarter included some early, modest effects from 5G backhaul upgrade projects, according to Dell’Oro.

The Dell’Oro Group “Router & Carrier Ethernet Switch Quarterly Report covers the service provider core and edge router, Carrier Ethernet switch, and enterprise router markets for current and historical time periods. The report includes qualitative analysis and statistics for vendor market shares, revenue, average selling prices, and unit and port shipments.
