Uniphase Corp., San Jose, CA, plans to invest in fiber Bragg grating technology by investing in Indx, the Sydney, Australia-based developer of fiber-optic reflection filters for wavelength-division multiplexing applications. Uniphase announced it would acquire 49% of Indx, with additional options to purchase the remainder. Indx was formed in 1995 as a subsidiary of Australian Photonics Pty. Ltd., the technology marketing and licensing company of the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Centre. According to Uniphase, Indx has a broad base of technology, products, and licenses, and the investment will provide an opportunity similar to the one the company experienced when launching its external modulators.
