Nokia Siemens Networks, FastWeb deploy 100G in Italy

Italian broadband provider FastWeb plans to deploy the first 100G-capable optical network between Milan and Rome. Using equipment from Nokia Siemens Networks, the upgraded network will be capable of simultaneously transmitting up to 40 wavelengths per fiber, each carrying data at 100 Gbps, giving a total data transfer potential of 4 Tbps.

Using equipment from Nokia Siemens Networks, the upgraded network will be capable of simultaneously transmitting up to 40 wavelengths per fiber, each carrying data at 100 Gbps, giving a total data transfer potential of 4 Tbps.

The new 100G link will be operational in the fourth quarter of 2011. Its deployment will ensure an improved experience for FastWeb's end users, with greater bandwidth and lower latency, or delay, in data transmission, the companies say.

"We are witnessing high demand for bandwidth, driven by increased uptake of enterprise applications and rich, bandwidth-intensive smart device applications. The transition to a 100G channel optical transport network will enable us to fulfill the demands of our existing users as well as attract new subscribers by offering differentiated services," said Mario Mella, chief technology officer, FastWeb.

As part of the contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will integrate its DWDM technology, based on its hiT 7300 optical network platform, into FastWeb's existing network infrastructure (see "Nokia Siemens Networks says 100-Gbps capabilities commercially available"). The contract also includes delivery of care services, including hardware and software maintenance as well as competence development.
