Lithuanian carrier TEO to offer 200-Mbps FTTH service

JANUARY 15, 2009 -- TEO LT AB, which calls itself the largest provider of integrated telecommunication, IT, and TV services in Lithuania, says it will offer residential customers the Internet access at up to 200 Mbps this March. TEO says its new ZEBRA Internet plan will be available to a “large number of customers.”

TEO currently operates its fiber-optic network currently in more than 30 Lithuanian cities. The carrier estimates the network will be available for use by approximately 95 percent residents of Vilnius and Klaipėda, 70 percent of the residents of Kaunas, half of Šiauliai residents, and a third of Panevėžys residents by the end of this year.

TEO says its services are currently used by more than 62 thousand customers. It forecasts that number will grow to more than 100 thousand by the end of the year.

At present, the FTTH network is available to nearly one-third of Lithuanian residents.

From March, TEO also intends to increase the speed of international Internet connection provided to the residential users of ZEBRA Internet services by up to 10 times. By the end of the year it is planned to increase the total speed of TEO international Internet traffic by more than double – up to 48 Gbps. According to research data, the speed of international Internet connection is one of the three most important criteria when selecting an Internet service provider, TEO says.

At present, TEO Internet services are used by more than 313 thousand customers.
