GCI (Anchorage, AK), a communications provider, has taken delivery of its new $125-million fiber-optic system from Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. (Morristown, NJ). The 2331-mi cable connects Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, AK, to Seattle, WA, with increased capacity for GCI`s Internet, video, voice, and data markets. The cable began carrying traffic in February. GCI`s new fiber cable network has an initial service capacity of 2.5 Gbits/sec and is upgradable to four wavelengths for a maximum service capacity of 10 Gbits/sec. The system`s collapsed ring configuration provides traffic protection for the entire network.
