Fiber-optic network expansion continues in China, with the opening in Hainan, China`s southernmost province, of a 1034-km system using 2.5-Gbit/sec Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) equipment and cable from Lucent Technologies. A fiber-optic cable project is under way to connect Harbin and Dalian, industrial cities in the northeast provinces of Heilongjiang and Liaoning, respectively. Eastern China`s Shandong province plans to set up two trunk cables to link its capital city, Jinan, with the capital cities of neighboring Henan and Shanxi provinces.
