Sources indicate that China plans to lay 12 lines of fiber-optic cable that represent an aggregate 33,000 kilometers. Eight lines already under construction include routes from Beijing to Guangzhou via Juijiang, and from Jinan to Yinchuan via Shigiazhuang and Taiyuan. Longer-range plans call for a major link from Beijing to Shanghai via Tianjin.
