Civcom, provider of multi-function free-space technology products for next-generation optical networks, has announced its Free-X 2x2 all-optical switch, the second in a growing family of SFS-based multi-function all-optical switches.

"Civcom's ability to develop optical solutions at a very rapid pace is demonstrated by completing the development phase of our Free-X 2x2 switches only a short while after we've announced the availability of samples of the Free-X 1x2 switch," contends Dr. David Mendlovic, chief executive officer. "We will soon begin early customer testing of our new Free-X 2x2 switch and are continuously developing new products for the benefit of our customers."

Free-X 2x2 complements the company's previous 1x2 switching solution. Both of these solutions are available in a fast or ultra-fast version with integrated VOA and multicast capabilities.

Civcom's SFS technology, based on free space propagation (FSP) and polarization encoding of optical signals, enables ultra-fast, polarization independent, strictly non-blocking switching in a compact package, claim company representatives. Moreover, because it has no moving parts, Civcom's switch is stable and reliable while exhibiting very low loss. According to the company, its technology applies to many telecommunications applications, such as protection/backup switching, OADMs, optical cross-connects and network testing and monitoring. The Free-X switch also provides the speed required for next-generation optical routing applications.
