Fastweb, Infinera conduct 600G trial on Milan-Bari fiber network

Dec. 21, 2021
The two companies conducted the trial ahead of the runup to Fastweb’s launch of 400 Gigabit Ethernet services using the Infinera technology, which is being added to Fastweb’s backbone network.

Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) and Fastweb say they have successfully completed a trial of 600-Gbps optical transmission using Infinera’s ICE6 coherent engine aboard the GX Series Compact Modular Platform. The trial saw single-wavelength 600G transmitted across Fastweb’s Milan-Bari optical route spanning 1,372 km. The demonstration also highlighted the ability to support 1.2 Tbps via a dual-carrier superchannel.

The two companies conducted the trial ahead of the runup to Fastweb’s launch of 400 Gigabit Ethernet services using the Infinera technology, which is being added to Fastweb’s backbone network. The two companies have a relationship that began with Coriant, which Infinera purchased in 2018 (see “Fastweb uses CloudWave Optics for 300-Gbps path on long-haul backbone network” and, more recently, “Fastweb, Infinera trial 500G single-wavelength coherent transmission”).

“Sustaining the digital transformation efforts of enterprises and meeting our customers’ need is our primary objective,” said Marco Arioli, technology officer at Fastweb. “We are constantly looking to improve our infrastructure to ensure we can always provide our customers with the highest bandwidth and best-quality services they need to be successful. ICE6 is a significant step forward for us, substantially increasing the capacity of our network with a smooth upgrade path and enabling us to keep up with the relentless demand for increased capacity of unpredictable bandwidth-hungry events.”

“Infinera’s ICE6 solution enables network operators to meet the demands of rapid bandwidth growth by providing the greatest capacity at the greatest reach, resulting in the most cost-effective and spectrally efficient solution,” added Nick Walden, senior vice president, worldwide sales at Infinera. “We are pleased to continue to support Fastweb’s upgrade of its network infrastructure to meet today’s growing bandwidth demands.”
