GTRAN Inc. has introduced a new small-form-factor, 10-Gbit/sec transponder module, the GT10-TRU. It is based on GTRAN's internally developed ICs and optics and is smaller, "smarter," lower powered and more cost effective than comparable 300-pin MSA solutions, claims the company.
Measuring 2.2" x 3.0" x 0.53", the TRU uses the industry standard 300-pin connector and is SONET GR-253-, MSA- and OIF-compliant. Like the current GTRAN line of TRS modules, the GT10-TRU supports all the current 10-Gbit/sec rates, including OC-192 SONET (9.955 Gbit/sec), 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10.3 Gbit/sec), Forward Error Correction (10.66 Gbit/sec) and Digital Wrapper (10.709 Gbit/sec).
New features include an embedded microcontroller that gives the user newfound "intelligent" flexibility and performance benefits in real-time, says the company. Using a two wire interface, the user can control module parameters such as extinction ratio, laser temperature (which can be used to tune the laser), duty cycle, laser bias current, modulation current, jitter adjustment, and slope adjustment of the analog monitors. Customer specific firmware allows standard settings for flexibility without the challenges of programming.
The TRU supports distances of 2 km, 12 km and 40 km in both 1310-nm and 1550-nm wavelengths. The TRU's cooled optics allow greater reaches, with GR.253-compliant jitter performance and optical eyes. Typical power consumption is 5 W, with a maximum of 7 W.
The TRU incorporates GTRAN's internally developed opto-electronic ICs, including a limiting amplifier, transimpedance amplifier, laser driver, and PIN receiver.
