Optical Communication Products launches compact OC-48 optical transponder products

Aug. 28, 2001--Optical Communication Products, Inc., a manufacturer of fiber optic subsystems and modules for metropolitan area networks and high-speed premises networks, announced the availability of its new OC-48 optical transponder products, the PTC-48S and PTC-48SL series.

Optical Communication Products, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCPI), a manufacturer of fiber optic subsystems and modules for metropolitan area networks and high-speed premises networks, announced the availability of its new OC-48 optical transponder products, the PTC-48S and PTC-48SL series. Optical Communication Products, Inc. (OCP) has developed these OC-48 optical transponders in response to the growing demand for higher integration and functionality and smaller package size in metropolitan/access and high-speed premises network equipment.

OCP's optical transponders combine the functionality of an optical transceiver with SONET/SDH electronic multiplexing (MUX) and de-multiplexing (DEMUX) including clock and data recovery (CDR) together in a single package. The transmitter portion of the OC-48 transponder accepts sixteen OC-3/STM-1 (155 Mb/s) electronic signals, multiplexes them together and provides a single OC-48/STM-16 (2.5 Gb/s) optical signal at the output. The receiver portion of the transponder performs the reverse function, accepting a single OC-48/STM-16 optical signal and providing back sixteen OC-3/STM-1 electronic signals at the output. They both operate from a single 3.3 volt power supply.

The PTC-48S and PTC-48SL transponders are about 60 percent of the size of OCP's standard PTC-48 transponders announced in December 2000. In addition, the PTC-48SL transponders consume typically one-third less power than the PTC-48. All transponders are fully compliant with the SONET/SDH standards requirements. They are available in Short Reach (2 km), Intermediate Reach (15 km), Long Reach (40 km) and Extended Long Reach (80 km). They also satisfy Class I Laser Safety requirements in accordance with the US FDA/CDRH and international IEC-825 standards. The electrical connections conform to the industry de-facto standard pin-out.
