Oki Semiconductor releases high-power pump laser modules, 10 Gbps InGaAs photo diode
Sept. 4, 2001--Oki Semiconductor released two new high power 1480 nm pump laser diode modules for the next generation of EDFAs, as well as a new 10 Gbps Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) model of its photo diode.
Oki Semiconductor, a technology partner for the new era of digital communications and convergence, released two new high power 1480 nm pump laser diode modules for the next generation of Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs). By deploying the new modules throughout their long-haul DWDM-based fiber optic networks, customers can increase the distance between each EDFA, thereby lowering the number of EDFAs needed to regenerate a signal and saving the customer significant costs in infrastructure investment. Both new modules support the high-performance needs of DWDM for EDFAs.
Designed specifically for long-haul fiber optic systems, the OL4128N-160 and OL4128N-180 modules are lower in cost than their predecessors, while still providing EDFA manufacturers with improved performance. The modules incorporate a Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC) design allowing for lower current operation and improved temperature stability. The OL4128N-160 and OL4128N-180 can operate at 160 mW and 180 mW of kink-free power, respectively. In addition, the modules have an industry-standard 14-pin butterfly package design, making them compatible with other pins.
Samples of Oki Semiconductor's OL4128N-160 and OL4128N-180 are available now. In volumes of 1000 units, the OL4128N-160 modules are priced at $1,100 and the OL4128N-180 modules at $1,500.
The company also released a new 10 Gbps Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) model of its photo diode with a transimpedance amplifier and an integrated preamp. Designed especially for OC-192-based fiber optic networks, the OD9651N module combines a low power consumption, high-trans-impedance design in an integrated InGaAs pin photo diode and pre-amplifier, providing a cost-competitive performance solution. Optical network manufacturers deploying the next generation of optical transceivers can now offer their customers enhanced system performance.
The OD9651N is designed specifically for OC-192 single-mode fiber applications, and is available at carrier rates of up to 10.7 Gbps. Available in a 17-pin low-profile surface mount package, the module operates over a wide temperature range of 0 to 70°C and has a typical responsivity of 0.8 A/W at 1550 nm. Demos are also available to help speed customers' evaluation and qualification process.
