InterNexa, ADVA Optical Networking trial Telecom Infra Project Voyager whitebox packet DWDM transponder

ADVA Optical Networking and fellow Telecom Infra Project (TIP) member InterNexa S.A. have completed a successful trial of TIP's Voyager open whitebox packet DWDM transponder. The trial, conducted October 23, saw the successful transmission of 100- and 200-Gbps on InterNexa's fiber-optic network between Bogotá and Medellin, Colombia.

ADVA Optical Networking and fellow Telecom Infra Project (TIP) member InterNexa S.A. have completed a successful trial of TIP's Voyager open whitebox packet DWDM transponder platform (see "Telecom Infra Project intros Voyager white box open packet DWDM transponder"). The trial, conducted October 23, saw the successful transmission of 100- and 200-Gbps on InterNexa's fiber-optic network between Bogotá and Medellin, Colombia.

The systems house said it integrated the necessary hardware and software components for the trial, which the collaborators conducted on two paths. One directly connected the two cities at a distance of 370 km. The second route included a diversion to Cali, creating a route of approximately 1,040 km. The transmissions were error-free, the two companies reported.

"We have found the Voyager transponders very attractive for both their capacity on the DWDM line side for 100G/200-Gbps speeds and for the support of Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols and features," explained Gabriel J. Vivares Arias, product development specialist at InterNexa's Product Management. "So we worked with ADVA Optical Networking to design a trial in our network, over our DWDM system that interconnects the main cities of Colombia -- Bogotá, Medellin, and Cali -- in order to run tests on an optical fiber network with a ring topology approximately 1,400 km long, based on a 50-GHz ROADM architecture designed to support 40x100G channels, with optical links up to 130 km on the direct route Medellin - Bogotá and at least three links with 180 km on average on the route through Cali, Medellin - Cali - Bogotá."

InterNexa plans another Voyager trial that will focus on interoperability tests in Layer 2 and Layer 3, including transmission tests in its Brazilian DWDM long-haul network.

ADVA has been enthusiastic in its support of the Voyager platform; it added the system to its product portfolio shortly after it was launched (see "TIP optical transport members vary in Voyager white box transponder support"). The company says that it is or has worked with a number of operators on trials of the Voyager system (see "Nine customers testing TIP Voyager white box transponder: ADVA").

Others have trialed the platform as well, including TIP member Equinix. Responding to a question at the recent Lightwave Open Optical Conference, Oleg Berzin, senior director, technology innovation at Equinix, reported the platform worked well it the trials in which Equinix participated, although he indicated further software development might be in order. He said his company currently does not have plans to deploy the system.
