Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) has unveiled new hardware and software products that enhance the service delivery capabilities of the company’s MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router. The products, some of which target business services and others consumer services, will speed new service deployment by as much as 69% while reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) by 42%, Juniper Networks asserts.

On the consumer side, Juniper Networks announced Junos Content Encore, a caching and intelligent content delivery system that works with the MX Application Services Modular Line Card to support multi-screen streaming television, video on demand, and similar services to a variety of devices. The new offering, which will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, obviates the need for separate appliances while providing enough caching to stream 80,000 videos simultaneously.

Also for consumer services, Juniper Networks unveiled Junos Web Aware, a software program that enables parental control services and targeted advertising. It is available now.

Three new products target business services applications. JunosV Firefly will enable deployment of new virtualized managed services, such as virtualized security, when it becomes available in the second quarter of next year. For hosted services, the product will enable carriers to isolate each customer domain within the cloud.

Meanwhile, Junos Node Unifier enables services providers to treat MX routers and Juniper top-of rack switches as a single virtualized element, which simplifies management of multiple nodes. This capability is available now.

The third business-related offering, Juniper Business Cloud CPE, enables service providers to offer customer monitoring and Layer 3 routing intelligence as a hosted service on the MX router. This new feature also is available now.

The combination of new capabilities significantly decreases the number of network elements a service provider will need at its service nodes, Juniper Networks says. The new capabilities will replace a host of separate appliances, including those for load balancing, network addressing, firewall, IPS and IPSec, parental control, ad insertion, application and subscriber awareness, deep packet inspection (DPI), and content management, according to the company.

Some of the new capabilities are already being implemented. “We are always looking for innovative ways to improve the service we provide to our customers and to reduce unit costs. Working with Juniper, we have developed a new way to deliver IP solutions,” says Luke Broome, CTO at Colt Technology Services. “The network architecture has been simplified, allowing us to eliminate the need for router equipment at the customer’s site. The first phase of the project, which covers Internet access, is helping Colt to remain competitive, and without the burden of another box on site, it will allow us to deliver new features and services from the network much faster than before. This is the first phase of our strategy to deliver cloud-based network services across the 22 countries we operate in throughout Europe.”

“We were looking for new ways to monetize our network by expanding our existing portfolio of innovative services we offer to our customers, and Junos Content Encore helped us do just that,” added Dianne Bissoon, vice president, Television and Entertainment, LIME. “The new LIME TV offering, enabled by Juniper Networks Junos Content Encore, delivers premium television content over our existing network infrastructure, providing entertainment services our customers love. LIME TV has been incredibly successful, and has increased our ARPU. We project LIME TV to gain more traction as we expand into new markets and offer advanced services, such as VoD, HD, DVR with Trick Play, in the near future.”
