Windstream (NASDAQ:WIN) says it has finished expansion of its metro fiber-optic network in area around Charlotte, NC. The new infrastructure will enable Windstream to address the needs of what it termed the city's "mid-market business community" through additional connectivity to local data centers and commercial buildings.

The new fiber cable infrastructure connects Windstream's national fiber network to several of Charlotte's major data center complexes and commercial buildings in the SouthPark, Uptown, and University areas of Charlotte. In addition to providing connectivity to other markets across the U.S., the new plant will also enable Windstream to deliver enterprise-class data, voice, network, and cloud services.

"Windstream's expansion of its metro fiber network is great news for Charlotte's business community because it is a critical building block for economic growth, innovation and job creation in our city," said Ames Flynn, CIO at Extended Stay America Hotels. "Windstream is bringing a next-generation, reliable, and flexible fiber network supporting the latest technology applications to Charlotte, and that investment is important to our continued growth."

The Charlotte expansion is the first in a program Windstream has launched to improve its fiber cable resources in select metro markets to better serve banking, financial services, education, healthcare, government, hospitality, and retail industries, among others. The service provider expects to launch expansion in such markets as Nashville and Richmond throughout this year.
