Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO) says it has landed a 20-year agreement for dark fiber worth $50 million from what it describes as "a major U.S. carrier." The otherwise unidentified customer will use 3,200 route miles of dark fiber on Zayo's existing long-haul fiber-optic network as well as on previously announced routes currently under construction.

The fiber-optic network services provider's North American long-haul dark fiber network includes approximately 29,000 route miles. Zayo has announced several construction initiatives to increase the network's reach (see, for example, "Zayo to extend dark fiber assets from Atlanta to Washington, DC"). It also has conducted a string of acquisitions (for example, "Zayo to buy colo provider Latisys, expand western dark fiber network").

"Zayo's dark fiber backbone will enable the customer to expand its footprint and provide high-bandwidth services to consumer and business customers," said Randy Brogle, vice president of Long Haul Dark Fiber at Zayo. "Dark fiber is an ideal solution for carriers that want to expand their network presence and effectively support future capacity requirements."
