Chile's REUNA taps Coriant for research and education network DWDM upgrade

REUNA, the national research and education network (NREN) in Chile, will receive an upgrade of its nationwide DWDM fiber-optic backbone network via Coriant's hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform equipped with Coriant CloudWave Optics, according to the systems house. The enhancements include the ability to support multiple 200-Gbps channels.

REUNA, the national research and education network (NREN) in Chile, will receive an upgrade of its nationwide DWDM fiber-optic backbone network via Coriant's hiT 7300 Multi-Haul Transport Platform equipped with Coriant CloudWave Optics, according to the systems house. The enhancements include the ability to support multiple 200-Gbps channels.

The REUNA backbone network serves 35 institutions. This includes the AURA Observatory, with whom they have partnered to implement the transport of data from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). Coriant says that, in addition to greater capacity, the DWDM network upgrade will enable the delivery of more flexible and resilient high-speed services, including programmable and automated end-to-end service activation.

The network upgrade project is in its deployment phase. Coriant says it is collaborating with education solutions partner Grupo Binário and local telecommunications systems integrator Raylex on the initiative.

"The interconnection of NRENs is fundamental to boosting the quality and velocity of research from universities and scientific communities," said Cleber Calegari, director for Education Vertical, Grupo Binário. "REUNA is taking an important step toward interconnection of NRENs in Latin America through a scalable and high capacity optical network."
