Jisc to deploy Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform for 400G wavelength connectivity

Feb. 5, 2018
Ciena says Jisc is deploying its WaveLogic Ai technology on the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to deliver 400G wavelength connectivity. Jisc operates the Janet research and education network that supports approximately 18 million UK college and university users. The deployment will position the Janet network to be among the most digitally advanced national research and education networks (NRENs) in terms of scale, automation, and network intelligence worldwide, says Ciena.

Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says Jisc is deploying its WaveLogic Ai technology on the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to deliver 400G wavelength connectivity. Jisc operates the Janet research and education network that supports approximately 18 million UK college and university users (see "Ciena to supply 100-Gbps systems for Janet6 research and education network").

The deployment will position the Janet network to be among the most digitally advanced national research and education networks (NRENs) in terms of scale, automation, and network intelligence worldwide, says Ciena. Universities, colleges, research centers, and all further and higher education organizations in the U.K. are connected to the internet through the Janet network, as well as alternative education providers, other public bodies, and science parks.

Jisc, which operates the most used NREN in Europe by volume of data carried, is alsoresponsible for all .ac.uk and .gov.uk domains.

"Working with Ciena, the Janet Network was the first NREN to provide 100G for users and, as demand has grown, is now the first to provide 400G," said Jeremy Sharp, Jisc network infrastructure director. "WaveLogic Ai enables us to operate efficiently and accurately engineer the network for optimal capacity to manage massive flows from new data-intensive research activities."

According to Ciena, WaveLogic Ai offers maximum network performance at a reduced cost, with tunable capacity up to 400Gbps (see "Ciena WaveLogic Ai" and "Ciena and the wandering WaveLogic Ai").
