Virgin Media selects Transmode as preferred supplier for metro optical WDM

Transmode Systems AB  says it has been selected as to the preferred supplier to Virgin Media for the UK cable operator’s national next-generation metro optical WDM deployments.

Transmode Systems AB says it has been selected as to the preferred supplier to Virgin Media for the UK cable operator’s national next-generation metro optical WDM deployments.

The new agreement is the latest in a series of Transmode wins with Virgin Media. In September 2011, Transmode signed a multi-year contract with Virgin Media to supply Ethernet-based mobile backhaul service delivery networks across the UK (see "Virgin Media Business turns to Transmode for mobile backhaul").

This new contract will see Transmode continuing to supply significant volumes of its TM-Series, but will expand the current business with the UK-wide deployment of next-generation flexible optical networking products including Transmode's range of ROADMs with advanced network management. The new agreement will also see the deployment of Transmode's Layer 2 Ethernet Muxponders, as included in the recently announced mobile backhaul contract.

Over the coming three years, the network enhancements will meet Virgin Media's development objectives, including extending backhaul services and the wider deployment of high-speed connectivity services, the company says.

Dan Hennessy, executive director, technical strategy and architecture at Virgin Media commented, "Our advanced optical network is a vital part of the best-in-class user experience for all of our customers, whether business or residential. The new architecture delivers the scale required to accommodate growth and paves the way for Virgin Media to offer intelligent next-generation services in the connectivity space.

"Having carefully evaluated a range of suppliers to meet the needs of Virgin Media's latest network enhancements, we have selected Transmode as it clearly demonstrated its superior technical and economical advantages in next-generation networks," Hennessy concluded.
