Fiber announcements have been coming fast and furious. Some are declaring the completion of networks and others the beginning, but all contribute to the notion that a gigabit storm is building across the nation. Here are some of the recent developments:

Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) has responded to an RFI from Los Angeles to provide gigabit service in the city. TWC's proposal involves HFC rather than all-fiber, as well as DOCSIS 3.1 technology as it becomes available.

AT&T (NYSE:T) signed multiple gigabit fiber deals in North Carolina over the past few months, including in Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh and Winston-Salem. All six cities are part of the North Carolina Next Generation Network (NCNGN) initiative along with four universities and a number of local businesses. The deal calls for AT&T U-verse with GigaPower over a fiber network with speeds up to 1 Gbps. The telco also plans to start launching gigabit service in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metro area this summer, and just announced gigabit plans for Nashville.

TDS Telecom (NYSE:TDS) has launched 1 Gbps high-speed Internet in New London, NJ, where it also offers TDS TV. The fiber-based service will provide speeds up to 1 Gbps downstream and 400 Mbps upstream. This is the second city in New Hampshire where TDS has rolled out this type of service.

Longmont, CO, plans to deploy a GPON-based municipal voice and data network. Longmont Power & Communications will operate the gigabit fiber network. Phase 1 of the six-phase construction cycle is slated to begin in August.

In Rock Hill, SC, Comporium nabbed two commercial gigabit Internet customers for its Zipstream symmetrical 1 Gbps service.

Bolt Fiber Optic Services plans to use Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) for an end-to-end triple-play solution for 1 Gbps broadband, voice-over-third-party VoIP and TV services. Bolt is the FTTH subsidiary of Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative. The GPON network will serve 30,000 cooperative members in rural northeastern Oklahoma. The service is expected to launch during the fourth quarter of 2014 and to be completed by April 2017.

Cox Communications announced the planned rollout of gigabit Internet speeds across its markets nationwide, beginning with new residential construction projects and new and existing neighborhoods in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Omaha. Market-wide deployment of gigabit speeds should begin by the end of 2016.
