ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS) announced the general availability of its second generation (Gen 2) of active modules for its E6000 Converged Edge Router (CER) CCAP. Gen 2 allows service providers to upgrade the existing E6000 Integrated CCAP (I-CCAP) chassis for remote PHY capabilities. The E6000 Gen 2 upgrade consists of the Downstream Cable Access Module 2 (DCAM-2), the Upstream Cable Access Module 2 (UCAM-2), and the Router System Module 2 (RSM-2).

The Gen 2 modules are designed to increase the service group density of E6000 deployments by more than 70%. The modules are designed to be software-upgradable for further channel density increases over time, using the same hardware and rack space footprint. In addition, service providers can transition with the E6000 Gen 2 modules to a remote PHY distributed access architecture (DAA), for an additional threefold density increase over the current generation.

"The E6000 Gen 2 modules realize the potential of next-generation services and make it easier for providers and customers to seamlessly transition to gigabit broadband and IP video services," said Dan Whalen, ARRIS president, Network and Cloud. "This upgrade dramatically increases the capacity of our market-leading E6000 CER as consumer demand for streaming high-bandwidth content continues to grow."

"Comcast is leading the way in gigabit services with our wide-scale deployment of DOCSIS 3.1. The ARRIS Gen 2 modules support our objective of efficiently expanding these popular services," said Dr. Robert Howald, vice president, Network Architecture, Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA). "The flexibility to be upgradable to distributed access architecture makes for a compelling addition to the E6000 platform."

ARRIS will demonstrate the Gen 2 modules at the SCTE/ISBE Cable-Tec Expo in Denver.
