AT&T (NYSE: T) will deploy fiber and electronics to its existing network in Miami in order to extend its GigaPower program to the city. The resultant all-fiber network will deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds up to 1 Gbps and AT&T's advanced TV services to consumers and small businesses. They will have the ability to watch and record five HD streams simultaneously and will have access to one terabyte of DVR storage.
Specific locations of availability and pricing for the Miami market will be announced at a later date. This is part of the initiative AT&T announced in April to expand its GigaPower network to up to 100 cities and municipalities in 25 markets nationwide. The company said it is also considering areas nearby Miami, including Hialeah, Hollywood, Homestead, Opa-Locka, and Pompano Beach as candidates.
The GigaPower network has launched in Austin and its surrounding communities in December 2013. AT&T has plans to double the households in that region with access this year. The company will launch GigaPower in Dallas and Fort Worth this summer. Plans also have been announced for U-verse with GigaPower in Charlotte, Greensboro, Houston, Nashville, Overland Park, Kan., Raleigh-Durham, San Antonio, and Winston-Salem.
AT&T to expand the GigaPower network to 2 million customer locations beyond what was announced in April when its acquisition of DirecTV is approved.
