Level 3 announces multi-million dollar global network deal with Verizon

July 18, 2001
July 18, 2001--Under the terms of the multi-million dollar agreement, GSI will use Level 3's (3)Link Private Line and (3)Center Colocation services for Verizon's new global network.

Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: LVLT) announced an agreement with Verizon Communications' Global Solutions Inc. (GSI). Under the terms of the multi-million dollar agreement, GSI will use Level 3's (3)Link Private Line and (3)Center Colocation services for Verizon's new global network.

GSI, which is responsible for assembling and managing Verizon's new network, will house switching and transmission equipment and related network interconnection equipment in Level 3's Gateway centers in Los Angeles and Miami. GSI will occupy a combined total of approximately 3,500 square feet in both locations.

Level 3's Los Angeles Gateway will serve as the Verizon global network's communications hub for the western United States, connecting Verizon's customers there with western Canada, Asia and Mexico. Level 3's (3)Link Private Line service connects Verizon in Los Angeles to the company's international gateway switch in New York, from which GSI will provide connections to eastern Canada and Europe.

Level 3's Miami Gateway will serve as the Verizon global network's communications hub for connections to the Caribbean, Latin America and South America.

Verizon announced plans in February for its global network, which will link the United States with major commercial and financial centers in Europe, Asia, Australia, Mexico and Canada. Links are already operating between New York and London; New York and Toronto; Seattle and Vancouver; Los Angeles and Mexico City; and between Honolulu and Hong Kong, Tokyo and Sydney.

Level 3 offers its (3)Center Colocation services through its advanced data centers, called Gateways. Level 3's Gateways are connected to the company's international Internet Protocol-based network. Gateways serve as portals to the network and provide a secure environment in which communications companies can physically locate their equipment. The facilities also house Level 3's own equipment and offer customers interconnection with the public Internet and other long distance networks. Level 3 currently operates Gateways in 65 markets in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Level 3's (3)Link Private Line services are dedicated amounts of bandwidth connecting two fixed locations while bypassing the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Typically purchased by customers (such as Internet Service Providers and telecom carriers) who need to transmit large amounts of data, video, or voice quickly and efficiently, private lines connect points in the same city, stretch across the country, or hook up customers around the globe.
