April 12, 2004 Hilversum, The Netherlands--Lucent Technologies announced an exclusive agreement to grow the national ATM transport network of KPN and to upgrade this transport network in the Netherlands. The upgrade will increase the capacity of KPN's ATM network, enable the operator to evolve to a multiservice infrastructure and will allow KPN to support UMTS traffic while reducing both operational and capital expenditure.

Under the terms of the agreement, Lucent will supply its switches, latest release of MXOS multiservice switch operating software and professional services support that will enable KPN to continue to offer high quality of service as it rolls out new voice and data services. The Lucent technology will also help KPN by boosting the network capacity as well as enabling the operator to more rapidly connect customers to services on the network.

By preparing the existing network for evolution to next generation infrastructure, the upgrade enables a cost-effective growth scenario for KPN. "KPN will be able to reap the benefits of the ATM network upgrade as the demand for bandwidth continues to grow. We need to continue to enhance our existing infrastructure to ensure that we are profitable as we evolve our network and services," said John van Vianen, vice president, product management from KPN. "The upgrade from Lucent enables KPN to develop our network to support new voice and data services, continue to grow our customer base and improve the quality of our services."

The new contract extends Lucent's agreement with KPN to supply the ATM core network. KPN's network includes Lucent CBX 500 and GX 550 multiservice WAN switches providing a high speed, backbone network that supports ATM services.

Lucent Worldwide Services will be providing maintenance and installation services to support the upgrade. "We are delighted that KPN has again selected Lucent to develop and prepare its transport network for the evolution to next generation infrastructure," said Huub de Klerk, Lucent's Customer Group leader, North Europe. "This announcement demonstrates our partnership with KPN, our experience and knowledge of the ATM market, and illustrates how Lucent continues to work with its customers to help them to cut costs and introduce revenue generating services."
