Cox Communications, Atlanta, GA, has signed a three-year contract that names Tellabs Inc. of Lisle, IL, as its exclusive source for Synchronous Optical Network (Sonet) 3/1 digital crossconnect systems. Under the $5 million agreement, Tellabs will supply its titan 5500 digital crossconnect system throughout Cox`s properties nationwide, including California, Virginia, and Arizona. Cox is building a multiservice network designed to deliver voice and data services in select markets nationwide. It will target residential apartment and condominium complexes in southern California before expanding to a broader residential market, and will offer commercial business services in Hampton Roads, VA, and Oklahoma City, OK. The Tellabs equipment will be used to provide a Sonet transport network connecting Cox`s hybrid fiber/coaxial-cable customer-access network to its central-office switching resources.
