Mar. 28, 2001--Embratel, a communications services provider in Latin America, has selected Tellabs to help connect the major Brazilian metropolitan areas to its backbone network. Tellabs also won new business with Saudi Telecom Company to help prepare its network for high-speed business services.

Embratel, a communications services provider in Latin America, has selected Tellabs to help connect the major Brazilian metropolitan areas to its backbone network. Embratel will use Tellabs' MartisDXX system to build, expand and enhance its telecommunications network. The first three cities where the system will be deployed are Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Campinas, Brazil.

The MartisDXX system is a managed access platform that will connect Embratel's subscribers to its backbone network. The system's modular design will enable Embratel to increase its network to meet the growing demands of a metropolitan market. In addition to the MartisDXX system, the network in Campinas will also include Tellabs' FOCUS transport system to help Embratel build a high-speed network using fiber optics to offer new and differentiated services.

The MartisDXX system is in operation in Embratel's Sao Paulo market and is being deployed in its Rio de Janeiro market. Other metropolitan cities, including Campinas, have plans to deploy Tellabs' systems. The MartisDXX system is in operation in more than 200 networks in 80 countries.

Tellabs also won new business with Saudi Telecom Company to help prepare its network for high-speed business services. Tellabs is assisting the Saudi Telecom Company (STC) with the migration of its analog voice and data services to a digital network that offers customers high-speed Internet access, video connections and virtual private networks. As part of STC's network expansion program, STC and its integration partner, Baud Telecom Company, will deploy Tellabs' MartisDXX broadband access and FOCUS optical networking solutions.

STC will deploy the FOCUS LX platform, which is an add/drop multiplexer that transports various broadband communication signals. Tellabs' MartisDXX system is a managed access platform that connects business or mobile subscribers to a communications network for access to broadband services.

STC started deploying Tellabs' solutions in January 2001. Tellabs and Baud Telecom will jointly design, install, commission, migrate, test and maintain the network.
