Dow Jones announces new fiber optic indexes

Aug. 2, 2001
Aug. 2, 2001--Dow Jones Newswires announced it began publishing its first index measuring fiber optic bandwidth prices.

Dow Jones Newswires announced it began publishing its first index measuring fiber optic bandwidth prices. The new index, the first of several that will make up the Dow Jones Fiber Optic Indexes group, will track prices for New York to Los Angeles, one of the most frequently used bandwidth routes.

Dow Jones Newswires will compile and provide oversight of the indexes. Data for the initial New York to Los Angeles index is supplied by seven companies that all trade fiber on a firm delivery basis and have been submitting weekly prices for long-haul operational circuits between major U.S. cities. Ten other firms have agreed to participate and provide information as the Fiber Optic Indexes group expands.

The index is published each Monday on several real-time Dow Jones Newswires products including, the Dow Jones Bandwidth Service, and in the weekly edition of the Dow Jones Bandwidth Intelligence Alert newsletter. In addition to the weekly indexes, Dow Jones Newswires will publish monthly averages for all routes at the end of each calendar month.

The Dow Jones Fiber Optic Indexes are designed to provide telecom professionals with benchmarking standards to improve market transparency and aid risk management. Prospective customers include: wholesale carriers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) and other telecommunications companies.

With plans to include other routes in the coming months, Dow Jones has compiled two sets of forward market indexes for the following routes: North American -- New York to Chicago, New York to Miami, Los Angeles to Seattle and Washington D.C. to San Francisco.

Several other North American routes will also be published including New York to Washington D.C., New York to Dallas, Los Angeles to Dallas, Dallas to Denver, San Jose to Chicago, San Jose to Los Angeles and Chicago to Dallas. Transatlantic routes will cover New York to London with future plans to include New York to Frankfurt and New York to Amsterdam.

"The new indexes by Dow Jones will provide a valuable benchmark as the burgeoning bandwidth market continues to grow," said Antoine Eustache, Ph.D., Global Editor, Energy & Commodities Indexes, Dow Jones Newswires.

The Dow Jones Fiber Optic Indexes are the latest addition to Dow Jones Newswires' bandwidth products designed to meet the needs of the developing broadband market. They include the Dow Jones Bandwidth Service, a streamlined service of stories, features and price reporting, and the Dow Jones Bandwidth Intelligence Alert newsletter, a weekly publication which provides the week's most important stories, price reporting and several unique features and columns.
