AT&T announces 2001 Internet data center and OC-192 IP backbone

AT&T (NYSE: T) announced that it has opened two additional Internet Data Centers (IDCs) and developed a fully operational, coast-to-coast OC-192 (10Gbps) Internet Protocol (IP) backbone. AT&T also announced its Internet Data Center buildout plan for 2001.

AT&T also announced its Internet Data Center buildout plan for 2001. The plan more than doubles AT&T's current Web hosting capacity and calls for the construction of eight more centers, at least one internationally.

The new hosting facilities, opened in December, are located in the New York/New Jersey metro area and Orlando, Fla. The new centers bring AT&T to a total of 13 IDCs with more than 1 million square feet of Web hosting space worldwide. The centers directly connect to AT&T's IP backbone and its IP-enabled, high-speed private data networks.

The new hosting facilities join the network of AT&T Internet Data Centers located on three continents. AT&T currently has three IDCs in the New York metropolitan area, two in San Diego, and centers in Silicon Valley, Middletown, Va., Phoenix, Chicago, and Orlando in the United States, Birmingham in the U.K., and Tokyo and Osaka in Japan.

AT&T's OC-192 IP backbone links form two paths across the United States connecting the cities of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, St. Louis, and San Francisco.

Customers will have access to AT&T's full portfolio of managed hosting services, including application management, database management, hardware and operating system management, intelligent content distribution service, high availability data and computing services, network and bandwidth management, storage services, managed security and firewall services, and professional services.

AT&T Solutions, the company's networking professional services arm, offers Quality of Service and customized Service Level Agreements on custom-hosted solutions. These are based on clients' requirements for applications and transactions.

AT&T can also tie customers' existing data networks, such as frame relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode, directly into its Internet Data Centers. As the market leader in data networking, AT&T is at the forefront of enabling customers to link their critical back-office operations, such as supply chain management and order fulfillment, to their Web-based applications.

AT&T's OC-192 IP backbone supports a wide array of managed Internet connectivity services ranging from speeds of 56 Kbps to 622 Mbps (OC-12). Providing reliable, high-speed Internet connections with Service Level Agreements (SLAs), AT&T is a provider of ultra-high speed, multi-megabit OC-X Internet connectivity services.
