Sept. 17, 2001--The FSO Alliance, an organization formed to promote the free-space optical communications industry and provide unbiased information about the technology, released its official charter that represents its members with a unified message.

The FSO Alliance, an organization formed to promote the free-space optical communications industry and provide unbiased information about the technology, released its official charter that represents its members with a unified message. The charter for the Alliance, which can be found on the Alliance website, highlights its goals to advocate free-space optics viability in the telecommunications marketplace and alleviate misconceptions about the technology.

Formed by the confluence of more than twenty free-space optic vendors and service providers that provide free-space optical systems and service around the world, the FSO Alliance represents its members by providing a unified strategic position to outside technical and media communities, as well as free-space optic-related information to the public for the purposes of conveying the technical and operations criteria, business application, safety and market opportunity of free-space optic technology. Additionally, the Alliance will serve as an authority regarding various issues pertinent to its members, such as safety, growth of the industry and the application of free-space optical technology for telecommunications.

"We've seen a dramatic growth in the free-space optics industry over the past year, evidenced by the thousands of installations throughout the world," said Steve Mecherle, FSO Alliance chairman. "Despite the quick emergence and recognition, there are still misconceptions and concerns about the technology that will be addressed via the Alliance."

The FSO Alliance will promote free-space optics as a viable broadband technology for metro access networks, backhaul and ultimately even residential applications. The Alliance will reach out to government, safety, networking and other working groups within the broader technical community that interface with free-space optical technologies. The Alliance will also actively support writers, publishers and industry analysts with Alliance-generated material, reference materials and responses to specific inquiries with regard to free-space optic technology, applications, market statistics and/or Alliance policy.

About FSO Alliance:

Founded in February 2001, the FSO Alliance is comprised of more than twenty companies. The Alliance provides information to the public, industry and media institutions, companies and/or individuals for the purposes of conveying the technical and operations criteria, business application, safety and market opportunity of free-space optic technology.
