NOVEMBER 26, 2008 By Stephen Hardy -- KPN (search for KPN) has moved to slow speculation that it's about to launch FTTH across the Netherlands.
According to a statement issued yesterday entitled "Further clarity on Fiber-to-the-Home regulation, no mass rollout yet," KPN and partner Reggefiber (search for Reggefiber) now have "further clarity" on the how FTTH networks will be regulated in the country. But while the two carriers have submitted a proposal for their proposed joint FTTH rollout, including access tariffs, to the Dutch competition authority NMa, that's as far as the project has progressed.
For now, KPN says, it will continue with its previously announced FTTH investments. "However, KPN does not yet have the intention to roll out FTTH on a large scale in the Netherlands," the company statement read. "KPN and Reggefiber will assess all plans based on timing and location, considering whether new investments can be justified commercially and taking into account the regulatory framework. KPN will proceed with its current FTTH pilots in five Dutch cities. A commercial evaluation will be conducted in the first half of 2009."
