Genexis, Cisco supply gear for high-speed FTTH connections in Dutch town of Zeewolde
FEBRUARY 11, 2010 -- Genexis says it is supplying equipment for an FTTH network in Zeewolde, situated in the center of the Netherlands. Zeewolde is the first Dutch town to offer Internet with download and upload speeds of 200 Mbps to its residents, according to Genexis.
The Zeewolde project is operated by Glashart, an initiative of FTTH operator Reggefiber, together with Internet provider XMS. As the demand for bandwidth grows, the downstream data rate can easily be increased to 1 Gbps, according to Genexis.
Genexis is supplying the FTTH gigabit home gateways for the project. Installed in the home, the Genexis gateway converts ultra-high speed signals on optical fiber to broadband services including voice, television, and Internet.
Cisco has been selected to supply the routers and switches for the FTTH network. Cisco 7609 routers are deployed in the central office, connecting the local fiber network to a high-speed backbone and service providers. The broadband Internet signal is distributed to the homes using Cisco Catalyst 4506 switches.
According to Michiel Panders, commercial director, service providers at Cisco, “The high-speed Internet connection not only enables the basic Internet, telephony, and television service package, it also opens a digital highway to the home that has huge potential. With the nearly limitless amount of bandwidth, homes can now watch multiple video streams in HD quality and simultaneously download movies and make phone calls over the Internet. In addition, with its super-fast fiber network, Zeewolde is ready for innovative services such as healthcare at a distance for the elderly through tele-presence and also e-learning and tele-working in order to reduce road traffic.”
Peter Kamphuis, director of operations at Reggefiber, views the launch of the 1-Gbps network in Zeewolde as the first step towards a new standard in FTTH networks. “The 1-Gbps equipment will replace the current 100-Mbps equipment. Even within this year, it is our intention to deploy this new future-proof equipment in those areas where we provide the active network.”
XMS has begun to offer Internet at a symmetric 200 Mbps in Zeewolde. In the course of 2010, the service provider plans to roll out similar service in other Glashart FTTH networks in the Netherlands.
