Lucent Technologies closes multi-million dollar fiber optic cable supply deal

July 12, 2001--NFOEC--Deutsche Telekom AG has selected Lucent Technologies to supply 1.5 million kilometers of optical fiber in a three-year, multi-million dollar deal.

Deutsche Telekom AG has selected Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) to supply 1.5 million kilometers of optical fiber in a three-year, multi-million dollar deal. Lucent will deliver single-mode fiber and its AllWave fiber.

The Lucent AllWave fiber, designed to accommodate higher capacities as network traffic increases, provides carriers with flexibility needed in metropolitan areas for transmitting a broad mix of services. Optical fiber contains a minute amount of water which so during manufacturing, a special refining process removes all the water content from the AllWave optical fiber. As a result, carriers can transmit 50 percent more wavelengths through AllWave fiber than they can through conventional fibers.

The cables will be manufactured at the Lucent optical fiber plant in Augsburg, Germany. Lucent has been supplying fiber optic cables to Deutsche Telekom from Augsburg since 1993.
