360networks completes segment of undersea fiber optic network in Latin America
360networks announced it has completed and lit a key segment of its undersea network in Latin America between Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Completed on time and on budget, the 3,250-kilometer (2,000-mile) segment is scheduled to enter commercial service in early May. 360americas now connects the United States, Brazil, Venezuela and Bermuda, and will reach Sao Paulo this quarter and Buenos Aires in the fourth quarter of this year.
360americas - claimed by the company to be the first fiber optic cable to provide high-speed connectivity between North America and South America -- will have a total system capacity of 1.36 terabits per second and span 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) by early 2002.
360americas comprises nine segments:
* 1,300-kilometer (800-mile) cable between Tuckerton, New Jersey and St. David's Bermuda
* 5,100-kilometer (3,200-mile) cable between St. David's and Fortaleza, Brazil
* 4,150-kilometer (2,600-mile) cable between Fortaleza and Caracas, Venezuela
* 2,800-kilometer (1,750-mile) cable between Caracas and Boca Raton, Florida
* 3,250-kilometer (2,000-mile) cable between Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro
* 3,600-kilometer (2,200-mile) cable between Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza
* 1,750-kilometer (1,100-mile) cable between Boca Raton and Tuckerton
* 2,400-kilometer (1,450-mile) cable between Rio de Janeiro and Las Toninas, Argentina (near Buenos Aires)
* 4,650-kilometer (2,900-mile) terrestrial route between Las Toninas and Rio de Janeiro
