Olex Cables, West Footscray, Victoria, Australia, is installing a combined optical fiber and microwave transmission system in China. This $10 million project for the Shanxi Provincial Rural Telephone Bureau is being financed by an Australian government loan through the Development Import Finance Facility of Ausaid. Olex`s communications division may subcontract the microwave component to AWA Australia and the optical fiber transmission equipment to Nokia Australia. The system will connect to 141 rural exchanges in nine key regions to enable high-speed voice, telegraph, data, facsimile and multimedia communications. Approximately 1400 kilometers of four- and eight-fiber optical fiber cable will be manufactured at the company`s Melbourne factory. AWA will provide 100 7-gigahert¥digital microwave radio terminals and Nokia will provide 34-megabit-per-second optical fiber transmission equipment.
