Corning multiuse platform supports fiber-optic network architecture mix

Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) has used the 2017 Fiber Connect in Orlando, FL, to unveil its multiuse platform, which combines multifiber and single-fiber connection points to enable fiber-optic backbones to support multiple network architectures simultaneously. The company sees carriers, operators, and municipalities using the platform as they deploy fiber-deep access networks to support multiple uses, including support of LTE and 5G wireless.

Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) has used the 2017 Fiber Connect in Orlando, FL, to unveil its multiuse platform, which combines multifiber and single-fiber connection points to enable fiber-optic backbones to support multiple network architectures simultaneously. The company sees carriers, operators, and municipalities using the platform as they deploy fiber-deep access networks to support multiple uses, including support of LTE and 5G wireless.

The platform family includes a local convergence cabinet that Corning says is smaller and lighter than standard alternatives. The cabinet can house a variety of splitter types and pass-through fibers to support multiple service architectures. The cabinet comes preterminated to lower installation complexity and cost. The family also includes factory-installed, sealed network access points with single-fiber and multifiber options. The network access points support a mix of fiber counts for residential, business, mobile backhaul, and wholesale applications simultaneously.

Overall, use of the preconnectorized platform elements can save 50% in labor costs and 20% on overall installed cost, Corning asserts. The company will show the multiuse platform at Booth 401 in Orlando.
