SCTE•ISBE launches Explorer initiative, seeks assistance from greater range of sources

The Explorer initiative encompasses standards efforts in areas that extend beyond the cable network industry and therefore will require participation and input from other fields.

SCTE•ISBE, which supports the international cable network operator community via standards, training, and other efforts, has announced the launch of standards work in seven new areas. The work is part of the new Explorer initiative, which encompasses standards efforts in areas that extend beyond the cable network industry and therefore will require participation and input from other fields.

The initial seven areas covered by the Explorer endeavor include:

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Aging in Place
Telemedicine
Smart Cities
Autonomous Transport, which will cover what SCTE•ISBE describes as “local autonomous transport machines.” Chris Bastian, senior vice president and CTIO for SCTE•ISBE, said that delivery robots that might interact with the broadband network would be an example of what he called “a sidewalk speed application” that would fall under this category. The group won’t look at the “highway speed” issues normally associated with autonomous vehicles, Bastian said.
