MAY 23, 2007 -- Tellabs (search for Tellabs) says its new 1134 multi-service access platform gives service providers the ability to connect fiber closer to homes and businesses, improving users' experience through greater capacity for Internet and video services.
With the Tellabs 1134 platform, service providers can offer a variety of services, including VDSL2 for high-speed Internet and gigabit passive optical networking (GPON). GPON, the latest technology to provide higher-speed services to consumers, enables movie downloads that take seconds instead of minutes. And, with its small size and low power requirements, the platform offers greater flexibility to respond to diverse deployment needs ranging from hundreds to millions of subscribers, claim Tellabs representatives.
Service providers must consider many factors when deciding how to deploy fiber: The condition of existing copper, the population density of a given area, and the ratio of homes to business, among others. The Tellabs 1134 platform, part of the Tellabs DynamicHome portfolio, enables service providers to deliver fiber where it makes sense, so they can choose to deploy fiber to a region, a neighborhood, or all the way to a home.
"Users need more speed to download and share videos without sacrificing reliability," notes Carl DeWilde, executive vice president of broadband products for Tellabs. "This platform enables our customers to deliver reliable, higher speed data and video applications to users in cities, suburbs, and rural areas."
As a single solution for multiple applications, the Tellabs 1134 platform uses only seven inches of rack space, less than the width of a sheet of paper, making it ideal for a range of applications, says the company. The platform also provides an upgrade path for existing Tellabs 1000 multiservice access series customers. According to Tellabs, it saves service providers time and money by enabling them to remotely upgrade existing Tellabs 1000 series cabinets to deliver faster fiber to users.
The Tellabs 1134 platform will be available in July.
