June 2, 2005 Petaluma, CA --Teknovus, a provider of semiconductors for optical access networks, has introduced its TK3711 Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) optical network unit (ONU) chip, which according to the company is in full production. The company says the customer premises equipment (CPE) device is among the only EPON chipsets to provide two service ports, including a gigabit user network interface (UNI), as well as hardware-based, service-contract enforcement for FTTH networks.

The company says the EPON chipset is optimized for delivery of triple-play services to residential customers. According to the company, by having two service ports, hardware-based service contract enforcement, and a built-in switch, the chipset enables cost-effective delivery of bandwidth-intensive residential services such as high-definition TV (HDTV). Further, the device's carrier-grade management capabilities serve to reduce operational complexity and cost, according to the company.

"The TK3711 was developed for customers who want a true carrier-class, multi-service ONU," says Dr. Rex Naden, CEO of Teknovus. "The high level of integration in the TK3711 greatly simplifies the ONU design and offers the lowest cost, to the point where mass deployment is now possible."

"To meet carrier requirements for high-performance triple-play services for the residential markets, our customers are looking for an EPON chip that provides a two-port solution while supporting multi-service management at an aggressive cost point," adds Dr. Lowell Lamb, vice president of marketing at Teknovus. "The TK3711 meets all of their requirements."

"The TK3711 is currently undergoing field trials before active deployment by a number of tier-1 service providers, worldwide," concludes Naden.

The chipset is currently shipping.
