The industry has rightly viewed flexible-grid wavelength-selective switches (WSSs) as a key enabling technology to support transmission based on superchannels. However, they’re not the only necessary piece to the puzzle. In this interview at ECOC 2012 with Lightwave Editorial Director Stephen Hardy, JDSU Chief Technology Officer Brandon Collings reviews the other building blocks necessary to support superchannel transmission and where the industry stands in terms of their development. He also discusses the optical component technology that will be needed to make 400-Gbps transmission a reality.
