The Massachusetts Information Turnpike Initiative, a University of Massachusetts program, is deploying a broadband distance-learning video network that spans 125 mi and uses sonet and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (atm) products by Nortel, Brampton, ON, Canada. Nortel supplies digital video-motion picture experts group (dv-mpeg) digital video coder-decoders, which are integrated with the existing telecommunications network. The network includes Nortel`s s/dms Transport Node OC-48 (2.5-Gbit/sec) fiber-optic equipment. The umass Medical Center will use Nortel`s dv-mpeg technology to broadcast from its video production surgery center and lecture amphitheaters.
