MP Telecom (Duluth, MN), the telecommunications arm of Minnesota Power Inc. (Duluth, MN), will purchase optical networking equipment from Nortel (Brampton, ON, Canada) for its carrier?s carrier network linking cities in northeastern Minnesota. The MP Telecom network will be deployed in a ring and use Nortel?s OC-48 (2.5-Gbit/sec) product plus dense wavelength-division multiplexing, enabling a total capacity of 20 Gbits/sec on each fiber. The system is planned for operation in November 1998.
