Nortel (Brampton, ON, Canada) will provide equipment worth more than $3.5 million to Kazakhstan?s national telecommunications operator, Kazakhtelecom (Almaty, Kazakhstan), under a contract won by its Turkish affiliate, Netas (Northern Electric Telekom?nikasyon). The contract is for sdh equipment and services for a network in the city of Almaty in southeast Kazakhstan. Nortel is supplying fiber-optic multiplexer transmission equipment to modernize the city?s network. The contract is a first step towards improving city networks prior to a countrywide initiative to implement a new transmission network.
