    Qwest Communications International Inc. (Denver, CO) activated the segment of its 18,449-mi nationwide fiber-optic network from New York City to Philadelphia and on to Washington, DC. With the lighting of the 233-mi segment in the east, Qwest now has more than 8,800 route-mi and 424,000 fiber-mi activated.
