Extreme Networks (Cupertino, CA) and Corning Inc. (Corning, NY) announced the successful transmission of Gigabit Ethernet over a 200-km fiber-optic connection. The 200-km link in the InteropNet Gigabit Ethernet backbone used Extreme`s Summit local area network switches, the Summit GbX Gigabit Ethernet extender, and Corning`s singlemode optical fiber. The system is intended to give customers a viable alternative to relatively high-cost sonet for long-haul data systems.
