Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd., Osaka, Japan, has set up a fiber-optic cabling venture with China`s largest telecommunications cable manufacturer. The new company, called Chengdu sei Optical Fiber Co., is expected to have an annual output capacity of 300,000 km. Chengdu Telecommunications Cable Co. owns a 75% interest, with Sumitomo holding the remainder. The company`s plant will be built in Chengdu, China, with 400 million yen being invested by September to upgrade production facilities. The new factory will import materials to make optical fibers from Sumitomo`s Yokohama facility. Some operations began in February.
