Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced that Impsat Fiber Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: IMPT) has selected Corning LEAF fiber as the optical backbone for the next phase of its high-capacity South American network.
After choosing Corning Cable Systems in 1999 for part of the recently launched network, Impsat choose Corning again to cable the LEAF fiber.
Impsat will deploy LEAF fiber in the significant network build that will connect the cities of Curitiba and Porto Alegre in Brazil with Paraná in Argentina, as well as points in Chile-more than 2,000 route kilometers. Impsat announced earlier this year that, as part of its extensive communication infrastructure in Latin America, it would expand its broadband network to create the first seamless connection between Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile.
LEAF fiber, an advanced non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) offers networks worldwide a low cost-per-bit advantage. Its patented effective area allows higher levels of power to be transmitted through the fiber than standard NZ-DSFs, minimizing the non-linear effects that degrade system performance. LEAF fiber typically helps drive down the cost of bandwidth and has been deployed by carriers worldwide in advanced, high-data-rate networks.
